Difference between Report Builder and Power View (aka Crescent)

  • Can someone help me understand the difference between Report Builder and the new Power View (formerly known as Crescent)? Both are geared toward ad-hoc reporting, right? I thought Power View was going to replace Report Builder, but according to the Tech Net article I found, both are going to ship and both will still be used. Can someone explain when we should use which tool? Is one geared toward a more tech savvy audience than another?

Here's the article that says both are shipping: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh213579(SQL.110).aspx

  • Report Builder is more for the tech savvy power user, since you still need to be able to write some queries (edit: unless everything is handed to you through functions or stored procedures). Report Builder also works on a native SSRS server and can run reports on relational databases as on SSAS cubes.

Powerview on the other requires less technical skill, needs to be run on a tabular model if I'm not mistaken and is integrated in SharePoint.

In my opinion, Powerview is the most ad-hoc reporting tool, while Report Builder is a reporting tool for developers who don't have Visual Studio installed 🙂
