I'm very much looking forward to the day (not far off) when I don't have to do this anymore.

Sorry to hear that. It isn't great to go do something you don't enjoy, but glad it's been a good career. I think it's good to have things outside of life, part of the reason I coach kids sports. I want things outside of work I enjoy that help me deal with the rough days at work

This is a mixed bag for me. I love programming. It is the most interesting thing I do in IT. But where I work, I am not allowed to do much programming anymore, which greatly irritates me. I don't know why. I've asked my boss to put me on a development project, but she doesn't. Worse, she doesn't even tell me why not. I intend to ask her about this in my next 1:1. Additionally, my CIO is trying to steer from what this agency has been developing with for more years that I have worked there, to big iron development. We're all shocked at the direction he's trying to take us. For many people the direction the CIO is driving us to, has made working there no longer enjoyable. I know many are looking for other work.
When you use AI, you're not really programming anymore. It's more of managing a team, which is something I do enjoy, but also not so much.

I have all my life, when I got to a substitute management position, did my best to get out of it. I enjoy the technical side of IT, but I love programming. I am lucky that there are still companies willing to pay me, even though I retired more than a decade ago.
