DB and VM backup timing

  • Hello experts,

In terms of backups, we have database backups set up, which I am familiar with, but we also back up our Windows VMs that host SQL Servers.

Do you know if it is good or bad to have the Windows VM backup happen at the same time as the daily database full backups? Or should one be done before the other?

    Thanks for any help.

  • For me the VM should be backed up after SQL especially if your backing up to local disk.  That way the VM backup will backup the backup files to tape/some other media/off site storage etc.

  • Thanks, Ant-Green! Much appreciated.

  • Hi,

please choose different times for your backups. On our backups with a snapshot of VM, your database were "frozen" for some seconds. If this appears in the night, nobody cares.

But if you choose the same time for both backups, this maybe a problem.

    Kind regards,

    Andreas
