Just to keep you updated, here is MS's response to the Connect post:
Greetings from Microsoft Connect!
This notification was generated for the following Feedback item:
http://connect.microsoft.com/SQLServer/feedback/ViewFeedback.aspx?FeedbackID=335613
which you submitted at the Microsoft Connect site (http://connect.microsoft.com).
Hello Jack, This bug was just discovered and fixed internally for SQL Server 2008. If you want a fix for SQL Server 2005 you can call product support and request a QFE for SQL 2005. None exists yet for SQL Server 2005. James Todd [MSFT]
You may receive a general "Feedback Item Updated" notification as well, if any other changes were made by Microsoft.
Thank you for using Microsoft Connect!
Regards,
the Microsoft Connect Team

Okay, I'm old and really tired of all the TLA's everyone throws around under the assumtion that we all remember what they are (for example what is ASP, and there are at least 2 correct answers to that!). What is a QFE, and does this mean there is currently no fix available for 2005?
Oh, and Jack, thanks for keeping us posted.

Accroding to Wikipedia:
A software development acronym for Quick Fix Engineering. This is the Microsoft and Intel term for a hotfix
ASP - Active Server Pages
Yes it means that there is not a current fix for 2005. Just another reason for SP3!

Thanks for the QFE definition. Now I only hope I remember it between now and the next time I see it used.
Well, I voted for SP 3 for SQL 2005.
