Database Engine Tuning Advisor exited unexpectedly error

  • I'm running the Database Engine Tuning Advisor (2008 R2) on my machine pointing to a SQL Server 2008 database. I've attached the query that is performing poorly that I used to run the Tuning Advisor's analysis. About 10 minutes into its working, I get an error: Tuning process exited unexpectedly. (DTAEngine).

Where should I start looking to fix this problem?

    Thanks,

    Rob

  • Another piece of info: The error happens while in the Submitting Configuration Information step; this is on the Development server. On the Test server, it gets past this step fine and runs to completion using the same query.

  • More info:

Doing a Bing search shows that many people had this error with SQL Server 2005 when there was SP differences.

The Test server (that it does work on) is:

The Dev server (that does not work) is:

    Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 (RTM) - 10.50.1746.0 (X64) Oct 5 2010 12:32:09 Copyright (c) Microsoft Corporation Standard Edition (64-bit) on Windows NT 6.1 <X64> (Build 7601: Service Pack 1)

The MSMS on my machine is:

    10.50.1617.0
