Database consolidation and backward compatibility

  • Advice please!

I am about to prepare an environment for consolidating databases. I have not been working long at this current company and I believe that there have been quite a few requests for installing backward compatibility packages in the past. My question now is if it is wise to install the 2005 backupward compatibility software on this new 2008 R2 consolidation server to be prepared for cases where it is needed? And to prevent from having to do this at a later stage when the server is already hosting production databases?

And is there any reason why I should not do it? Is there for instance security issues ?

  • I have not heard of Security issues due to backward compatibility. There could be other issues. Make sure that you run the Upgrade advisor for the DB's resolve all the issues before consolidating in the new SQL 2008 Env
