data file name changes on restore 2008

  • Hi All, this was originally posted under 'Newbie'. Has anyone else seen this behavior?

    Hello All,

I'm new to SQL Server 2008 and was recently tasked with restoring a database from SQL Server 2000 SP4 to SQL Server 2008 SP1, both enterprise. When I restored the database in 2008 I used the GUI and checked the logical and physical file names and locations and everything seemed fine. When the datafiles were restored to their directories SQL Server 2008 had renamed the physical file to databasename_integer.mdf/ndf where the integer was consecutive for all datafiles in the database of which there were about 30. The logical names were as before.

I ran restore filelistonly from disk ='drive:\backupfilename.bak' on the backup and the logical and physical file names were as they should be. Some of the file names are 35 characters long per the vendor.

Can anyone tell me what I'm missing? I didn't see any new configuration setting in the GUI to 'force' SQL Server to keep the original names. Could it be a special characters that were ok in 2000 and not okay in 2008?

Any help explaining this mystery is greatly appreciated.

  • I've seen that too.

That's why I script all my restores and alter the names myself.

You can also do that in the GUI.

  • Thanks ALZDBA - that's what I ended up doing. I was hoping someone could tell me why it happened - bug, undocumented feature, configuration setting, user error - something. Thanks again.
