Crackberries Are Coming To A Plane Near You

  • The government is getting ready to sell airwaves on planes for broadband access. Soon your wireless connection to work may follow you just about everywhere. With the pace of things and the number of wireless devices being sold, I expect this to be available next year on lots of planes.

I'm not a Blackberry fan. Maybe it's because despite the fact I get lots of emails, not many of them require an immediate response. Nor have they ever. Even in the corporate world, waiting a few hours, even a day for 90+% of emails is very acceptable, and maybe even good.

The delays force you to think a little more. We've all had a cooling off period for something and taking some time between the draft of a response and the sending can be a great thing. It doesn't even have to be an emotional response; any response will look different after some time has passed since it was written. Heck, half of these editorials or more are older than a day. And my thoughts on a second pass are much different than the first.

But more importantly, there is the respect for your personal space. Today I think with the quick pace and the amazing ability of our databases to serve up all sorts of information and news at any time of the day or night, we all, managers and employees alike, have lost some sense of when personal time starts and work ends.

Even the news I pull together for this newsletter is not a daily chore. It's a little too much for me to scour the web everyday for something to put out. I tend to go twice a week, 3 times at the most, and actively look for news to put out.

Getting critical information is important when you need it, but how often do you get it? And do you want your in-flight movie interrupted because someone back at the office can't find the SQL Server 2005 disk for their dev server?

  • It's great that someone is finally addressing this. I can't stand cell phones or anything like them, they are sometimes a necessary evil, not every minute of every day. I am seriously thinking of buying a jamming device like http://www.globalgadgetuk.com/Personal.htm , maybe it will help.

Insurance companies need to get serious about charging or not covering drivers that have accident while on the phone!

    Kindest Regards,

The art of doing mathematics consists in finding that special case which contains all the germs of generality.
