Continueing SQL server 2012 ??

  • Hi out there,

We are running a pretty important application on SQL server 2012 and the application will be upgraded within a few months (with the possibility to use a SQL 2016 environment).
Due to finances and lack of time (to set up a complete new SQL environment for SQL server 2016 (containing 50 VMs and 5 Physical servers)) our management is about to decide to still use the old SQL server 2012 environment for at least 12-18 months although I strongly recommended to start building a new 2016 environment.

What will be the issues we going to face continuing SQL server 2012 regarding techniques and regarding MS-support ?

Mainstream support for 2012 ended at July 2017 and extended support will end at July 2022
What will be the limitation using the extended support (and do we have to contact MS to use this extended support)?

Please can someone help me out on this (because time is running out to decide).
