I know someone out there has an explanation for the message I keep getting...
When I first open Enterprise Manager and try to view the contents of a server named ServerName I get the following two messages:
First Message
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
The SQL Server \\ServerName is not known to be running. Are you sure you wish to connect?
Second Message
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
A connection could not be established to ServerName.
Reason: Timeout expired.
Please verify SQL Server is running and check your SQL Server registration properties (by right-clicking on the ServerName node) and try again.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
After I hit OK and try to connect again it works without a problem, and if I also give it a few moments before viewing the contents of the server, it will not give me these messages.
It only does this for servers that are on a domain other than the workstation I am opening up SQL Enterprise Manager from.
Is this a network configuration thing or is it a property I need to set on the SQL Server or does my buddy Bill Gates need to ship out a service pack to take care of this issue?
Thanks for any help or insight,
Scott
P.S. I've noticed this for years but never really cared to find an answer until now, cause it would always work with a little patience.

When you first connect to SQL it attempts to poll the server to check the state of the services, this can be a problem if you are running with SQL authentication I've noticed (never had a problem with Windows auth). You can check that SQL is able to ping the server correctly and also if you can, get the network bods to look for dropped packets to the sql server.
