Connecting to SQL Server 2K over secure wireless network

  • Greetings, all! I have a home wireless network, and the desktop machine has SQL Server 2000 on it. I want the SQL client on the laptop machine on the network to see the server through Enterprise Manager. What baffles me is that I got this to work earlier by opening ports 1433 and 1434 on the server machine, and a netstat -an states that the server is listening on port 1433. Both machines are running Windows XP, and they can ping each other. I can telnet to port 1433 on both machines.

Windows XP Professional SP2 is on both machines as well.

Any ideas are appreciated. I will furnish more info if asked, but I am not sure what to provide at this point.

    Thanks,

    Jonathan

  • When you say port 1434, you mean udp port 1434? If so, have you opened that on your laptop? This is the catch all article for enabling SQL Server connectivity on Windows XP SP2:

  • I appreciate the links - I went and took a look at them. As a test, though, I disabled the Windows Firewall on both machines, and I still could not connect. The link above seemed to describe what to do if Windows Firewall is on, which I will do once I can get this working with the Firewall off.

Does it make sense that, with the Firewall off, I still cannot connect? I get a "timeout expired" message in Enterprise Manager when I try. Any help is appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Jonathan

  • With the firewalls off you should have been able to connect. Try this... create a connection in EM to <server name>,1433. That tells EM to make a connection to that server to TCP/1433. See if that succeeds or not.

  • I still get a Timeout Expired error. I can still ping the server machine, and I can telnet to port 1433.

This is really frustrating, because I had this working before, and as far as I know, nothing has changed. With the Firewalls off, and the machines able to see each other, I don't know why this is an issue.

I'll keep trying, but any help is appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Jonathan

  • Well, I got there. Windows Firewall turned on, ports opened as needed...I had to reboot after changing firewall settings, I think. Maybe that was coincidence.

Much appreciated that you answered my questions. I know it was not easy to help me with the info that I gave.

    Thanks,

    Jonathan
