Hi,
newby here. Have installed SQL Server 2014 Management Studio and Report Builder 3.0 on my PC. I can't seem to find anything on the net on how to connect the Report Builder to the Management Studio. Well, I find some stuff and it's not simple enough to follow and appears to expect that they are either already connected or have permissions problems. On the permissions problems there seems to be no clear explanation on how to get permissions. The techniques mentioned I don't see on the programs.
I really have no idea if I've even got them installed correctly and have no idea how to check.
I have a really simple database on the Management Studio and just want to print it off ( it will get more complicated over time ) but I can't even start!
All the best,
Tim

I don't understand why you would want to connect report builder to SSMS? Could you explain your requirements?
The report builder tool is usually a stand-alone report authoring tool which is usually used by business users.

Hi BL0B_EATER,
Thanks for replying.
I have a database which I want to print reports from. If it is possible to print reports from the Management Studio directly, then that is fine. Or, if it is possible to have a database for the Report Builder, then that is fine. Else, I have no means of printing off my database. So, I'd assumed that the two worked together?
All the best,
Tim
PS I'm updating the technology for a database that I've been using for some time ( previously on Access, then LibreOffice ). I no longer have Access and LibreOffice / OpenOffice keeps crashing, therefore I assumed ( perhaps wrongly ) that a Microsoft solution might be more stable on a Microsoft kit?

Ok I think I understand now.
Lets say your database is on a server ABCSQL01, you then load report builder and there you will have an option to create a dataset, this dataset then should point to ABCSQL01 (these datasets will live on a report server), here then you can create a new report which you can then print if needed.

Hi,
sorry for the long wait for reply. I had other things to do.
When I start up Report Builder, I have the option of a New Dataset, but there are no data source connections or when I browse other data sources, it is blank. There appears to be no way to connect to a data source. I only have a PC, so there can't be another server ( unless you include the internet ).
Starting up the Management Studio, I then try to connect to the Report Server. The connection fails with an error report about not being able to connect to the server that is specified in the URL 'named server'. The named server is correct but it isn't a URL ( it's simply the name of the computer ). Then it says, make sure the server is running ( the PC? ), the URL is correct ( surely it knows the name given, by me, to the PC ) and you have permissions to use the server ( I'm the admin., surely ).
Still no ideas how to connect the reports to the database.
All the best,
Tim
