I've tried a number of suggestions from various blogs:
1) mofcomp.exe "C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft SQL Server\100\Shared\sqlmgmproviderxpsp2up.mof"
2) grant users and network rights to the \share folder
I haven't solved the problem yet
Any other ideas?

I'm trying to start SQL Server Configuration Manager. The message I get is "Cannot connect to WMI provider. You do not have permission or the server is unreachable."

Did you try changing the service account of "Performance Logs and Alerts" service? May be you can try starting it with the SQL Server service account.

Pradeep, I needed to run Configuration to enable FILESTREAM, but now I can't even connect to the instance of MS SQL. I think I am going to have to reinstall but it will have to wait until next week because I don't have the media here. Thanks.
