Does the performance of SQL 2005 in 80 compatibility mode have significant improvement over running SQL 2000?

That depends. Are you running it on the same server or comparing different servers?
For my environment, I have noticed an improvement.

it's on the same server.

For me, it did run better. I have seen it not perform as well. That is due to improper configurations or code.
