Client Connectivity Tools on the server?

  • So I'm trying to find some info on what the client connectivity tools are good for and when you should install them on the server hosting the sql server instance? Is it necessary, advantageous or unnecessary to do so?

    Some questions:

Exactly what does the Client Connectivity Tools contain, what is installed?

Do you need them for the sql instance on the server they are installed on for remote clients to be able to connect directly to the sql instance (through an ODBC-driver or SQL provider)?

Do you need them to connect to another sql instance on another server from either a client application or the sql instance itself (mirroring, replication, etc)?

Do locally running applications need them to access the sql server instance?

    Thanks.

  • See if this answers your questions.
