Unfortunately, none of the answers will work as they all return NULL since they fall outside of the acceptable range of values for NCHAR (0 through 0xFFFF).

It works if your database uses one of the _SC collations. In that case, NCHAR accepts arguments up to 0x10ffff. It's an easy one to miss, and if your database is old (or the script that creates it) it probably doesn't use any of those.

Just because you're right doesn't mean everybody else is wrong.

Ah, apologies. I'll correct this. I'm sure my test db had an _sc collation
