Capturing a boot screen without Windows being loaded

  • My colleague has just come up with this and its a bit of a puzzle. Say you are loading software onto a pc or laptop. Windows is not loaded yet but you want to capture the screen shots as they go through. Because Windows isn't there, you cannot use Alt and Print Screen.

Now both of us are sure that there is a method (both of us think we were told this at Uni) but for the life of us, we cannot remember.

Does anyone else or are we making it up?

  • 3 ways off the top of my head... probably not what you're looking for, but they should all work.

    1 Digital Camera?

2 Use Virtual PC, VMware or some other virtual solution. As you do your load take screen shots of the virtual environment.

3 Make use of some sort of remote control card, Like the Dell DRAC (Dell Remote Access Card), HP iLO (Remote integrated Lights Out) etc. These usually allow you to open your console remotely from a browser window. You'll be able to take screen shots from that.

  • I was thinking camera as well, but the VM thing makes sense. Assuming you're not capturing any hardware specific stuff.

  • Just wanna say that incase you want to note down some values while booting and for this reason if you are thinking of Print Screen then there is an option.

Press PAUSE/BREAK button in your keyboard while booting and screen will freeze with contents at that moment and after noting the values you can release the FREEZE by pressing Enter Key.
