Can't restore a Copy Only backup

  • I'm trying to restore a Copy Only backup from a production server onto a test server. When I specify the backup file for the restore I can click the browse button, select the file, and see the backup set within the file. However, when I return to the Restore Database screen, the backup set doesn't show in the "Select the backup sets to restore" list. Does anyone know how to get the backup set to show so I can complete the restore?

    Thanks!

  • it was backed up on a different server so is not recorded in msdb so will not show up. select the restore from a device option and browse to the .bak file you want to use

  • Try typing the restore command manually. I seem to recall running into an issue with Copy-only and the GUI restore window.

  • You don't need a set, just restore it.

  • "If it was backed up on a different server so is not recorded in msdb so will not show up. select the restore from a device option and browse to the .bak file you want to use"

I've done that. That's how I saw the set within the backup. However, it still doesn't show in the "Select the backup sets to restore" list.

  • "You don't need a set, just restore it."

When I try to restore with no sets showing and therefore none selected, I get the error "You must select a restore source."

    That worked! You rock Gail.

  • Not have tried to restore a copy only backup, ever, the only suggestion I have is to script it manually and see if that works.
