Cannot install SQL Server 2000 SP4 on database instance

  • I have started a new job and am trying to get the service packs up to date. I have installed SP 4 on the default instance without any errors, it had no SP at all previously.  When I try to install on a database instance I get the following error:-

STARTEAM is not a SQL Server 2000 instance.

    Setup will now exit.

I ran @@version to see what version was already there.

Is there any way I can get round this without reinstalling SQL Server for this instance?

  • Did you run it as STARTEAM or servername\STARTEAM?

    -SQLBill

  • I ran it from the downloaded bat file, and the instance name was in the dropdown list as STARTEAM.

  • I saw this on Tek-Tips.com. While it is for MSDE, it seems to be the same problem you are having. Try following the directions but using the SQL Server folder.

    From NigelRivett on tek-tips.com

Found this on sqljunkies from a search in google

    sql2kdesksp3.exe instance

If installing MSDE Service Pack 3 causes the error "Instance name is invalid," do the following:

Browse to the folder that you extracted the MSDE service pack files to.

    1.Browse to the MSDE directory.

2.Right-click on the Setup.exe file and select Create Shortcut.

3.Right-click on the shortcut to Setup.exe and select Properties.

4.In the target field add /upgradesp sqlrun blanksapwd=1 after Setup.exe.

If you extracted the files to C:\sql2ksp3\MSDE the string is

    "C:\sql2ksp3\MSDE\setup.exe /upgradesp sqlrun blanksapwd=1".

(do not use " " if the original string does not have it)

5.Double-click on the shortcut to Setup.exe to run the upgrade.
