Cannot Connect to sql server 2005 showing error

    hii

    my query is i cannot connect to sql server 2005 it asks me the server name nd i dont know it when i go to browse dialog box there are no server name shown i want to connect sql server 2005 through windows authentication nd i dt knw wat is the instance name plzz help

    If you don’t know the server name (Instance) then you can’t connect to SQL Server. This is how it is designed.

    If the SQL Server Browser Services are not running on server the server name will not appear in the server list.

    As an alternative, if you know the system name / IP and system has only one instance (default) installed on the system and it uses default port, you can connect with IP address / system name.

    p.s. it is not backup related question and should have been posted in general forum. Please take care of it in next thread.

    hi hp7766,

    first of all if u select default instance name at the time of sql server 2005 setup then the server name is ur computer name.

    And if u use sql server 2005 express edition then its like this, "ComputerName/SQLExpress" its either / or \ , plz try both.
