Cannot Connect to Default Instance

  • Hello,

I am running SQL Server 2005 Enterprise Eval with a full installation. I have added SQL Server 05 SP1. This is on Windows XP Pro, sp2. I have one default instance of SQL Server 05 with the default name, 'mssqlserver'. SqL Server 2000 is not installed. The machine name is CDNOTEBOOK1.

In SQL Server BI Studio (Visual Studio), when I right click database connections, add a sql server connection and a attempt to connect, I cannot get a list of servers. I went to Tools\Options\database options\database connections and left the 'Sql Server Instance Name' blank. The user that I'm logged in under  has sysAdmin rights on the default instance.

I'm not an account administrator or network administrator. so bear with me on this; The installation of SQL Server 05 was done on a computer that is not a member in a domain. There is just the domain called 'WorkGroup', and I think it is accurate to say that all definded local users are a member of 'WorkGroup'. In other words, this is a 'stand alone' machine.

Is there some special account that needs a login to SQL Server 2005 for this to work, or is there some other problem?

     Other things I have tried:

-Checked SQL Server Configuration Manager to ensure that TCP/IP was enabled as a protocol.

    -Started the SQL Browser Service.

-Added the following programs in firewall exceptions; SQLBrowser.exe, SQLSrvr.exe, devenv.exe

-Added the following firewall port execeptions; mssqlserver/1433, SQLBrowser/1434

I still do not get anything in the server dropdown list when I attempt to create a connection to SQL Server from within Visual Studio. What else could the problem be?

Other things I will try shortly; I was told to type just a dot (.) in the server name dropdown. It was also suggested that I create a UDL file on the desktop, then look at it through notepad to see the connection string.

If you have any suggestions, please share.

    Thank you for your help!

  • I have been able to create a .udl file, but I cannot open it. When I try to open the udl file, I get the following error message; Microsoft Data Link Error; File cannot be opened. Ensure it is a valid Data Link file.

Could there be something wrong with an MDAC version?

    Thanks again.

  • Fixed the problem. It may have had something to do with an MDAC version. I ran sp 2 for Windows xp again, and the problem cleared up.

    Thanks!
