I have a new VPS where I have SQL Server 2008 Express installed.. I enabled TCP connections (remote connections is enabled) and restarted the service. Poking a hole in the firewall for my remote IP, I am able to connect to it remotely from OSQL, but *not* remotely from SQL Management Studio. What the hey?
SSMS connects with,
Server Type: Database Engine
Server Name: [hostname]\SQLEXPRESS (<< "[hostname]" is rather the host name, obfuscated for this public forum)
Error message (after about 20 seconds timeout):
TITLE: Connect to Server
------------------------------
Cannot connect to [hostname]\SQLEXPRESS.
------------------------------
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 26 - Error Locating Server/Instance Specified) (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: -1)

Yet, OSQL connects just fine.
Ideas?

Nevermind. My OSQL test was invalid. I was connecting to localhost while using the remote computer.
