Thank you for articulating this perspective! It's how I instinctively live my life but wouldn't have been able to express it so clearly. I really like your "can't yet" line - I hope it's the right reframe for my kids (who are frustrated when I ask them to just try something and they say they can't and won't and don't).

I like your take here Steve. I would to add an addendum thought, which is "don't have to". Over the years the skills required for career growth, or even sustainability, in a data field has been increasing and to some extent now has slowed down with the pervasive second mind of AI. I had never 'had to' learn Python previously but when making a gradual shift to data engineering I 'had to'. It is how you look at the incentive that makes the difference. For me, it was primarily to your point of curiosity and self achievement, not to garner a larger salary or get a promotion. Those things are natural by-products of the achieving a new skillset, not the goal, in my opinion. My incentive for working more hours, however, may be to gain a larger bonus. In this case I 'have to" put in more work to get the cash even though I may not want to. I don't 'have to' learn scala right now, for example, because there is no direct immediate benefit to me, financially or personally so I 'won't'. I rarely think that I 'cant' do something, more so that I don't 'have' to or 'want' to right now. After all of these years, the passion is still there and the reward for hard work and learning is enthusiasm to learn more. But work is still work and we would all rather be fishing anyway, which is one thing I still 'can't' do well.

Glad you like it

Agreed. You don't have to, though I hope you consciously make the decision not to instead of just passively letting things happen.
