I'm a programmer, not a DBA. I'm fairly versed in beginner to possibly intermediate SQL (inner joins, outer joins, group by union, indexes, etc...)
Familiar with .NET, Java, Perl, etc and have been doing programming for quite some time, so i am not looking for a 'dummy's book'. I have no problems with what others might consider dull reading, but i am looking for a book that assumes the person is familiar with introductory SQL and is a decent programmer, but is not familiar with stored procedures
(at previous jobs, stored procedures were either not allowed or were handled only by DBAs)
Please feel free to post here, or contact me directly.
Thank you very much,
Matthew

SQL Server 2005 Bible (Wiley Publishing) by Paul Nielsen, has very good data on that (and a ton of other data).

I've got two, one I've read and one I want to read:
Inside SQL Server 2005: T-SQL Querying
by Itzik Ben-Gan
It's just a wonderful book. I refer back to it regularly. The first two chapters are worth the price of the book. Once you understand how the query engine works, writing decent queries becomes a bit easier.
The one I'd like to read because of the great stuff I've heard about it is:
by Stephane Faroult and Peter Robson

Also, both these are reviewed over at the SQL PASS Book Review SIG. Along with a bunch of others.
