Books Online / Stupid Help Viewer

  • GAH. I HATE the new Books Online.

I am trying to search for a specific phrase, but no matter what I type in the Find box, it won't find anything. Do I really have to drill down to the specific page in order to find the keyword I'm looking for?

That's ridiculous. If I knew where to find the damn topic, I wouldn't need to search on it. That's why I loved the Index tab of the old BOL.

Anyone have any advice? I prefer using BOL on my desktop, not online. Google never takes me to the BOL page I want.

  • I use online for most of this, for the reasons you mentioned. Even if you want to use local, sometimes Google helps you narrow the topic.

Can I ask what you are looking for information about?

  • Someone mentioned a setting in a post without mentioning if it was a server, database, or object level setting. I wanted to plug in that phrase and see what popped up.

I found out later it was a LinkedServer property, but I was highly annoyed I had to Google it instead of pop it into the Index page and have it come up like it usually does.

  • I've submitted this a few times. The classification of DMVs, DMFs, functions, etc. is a problem for me. I often can't tell if it's in a particular area, so I want an index.

I'd imagine the search in the help viewer is pretty bare bones.

    Leave it.

    Forget about it.

I found the new BOL absolutely useless.

Google may not be perfect, but at least it gets you what you need after couple of iterations.

BOL will just waste your time.

I'm note even sure if the search works. I've certainly not been able to find anything yet and it doesn't seem to go beyond the page / topic I've got open. So if I try to start at the top, it won't filter down to the subfolders.

This morning, I needed to see what INFORMATION_SCHEMA catalogs existed. So I opened SQL 2008 BOL, typed in INFORMATION_SCHEMA and up pops everything in the left hand corner in alpha order. That is the kind of thing I want to be able to do.

And this help viewer is completely useless in that respect. I guess I'll be keeping around the 2008 BOL for a while to find stuff like that. Then Google everything else.
