Hi all,
I'm trying to create a calculation on a cube within BIDS, but everytime I open the calculation tab screen, i get an
Unexpected Application Error Occured (really helpful stuff!)
I'm using VS2005 SP1. Is there a known problem/fix for this?
I need to create a KPI, but can't do it without creating a calculation

You might want to take a look at some postings in the Microsoft forums in regards to this being related to a mismatched dll issue:

hello,
this might be caused by version mismatch between some binaries. i'd suggest checking the versions of msmdlocal.dll and msmgdsrv.dll and making sure that the ones installed into %ProgramFiles%\Microsoft Visual Studio 8\Common7\IDE\PrivateAssemblies\ are the same as those in %ProgramFiles%\Common Files\System\Ole DB\ (if they are not then try updating the ones in the PrivateAssemblies with the ones from ole db; you might want to save the original ones as to be able to get back to original state just in case...)

stumbled across this whilest looking for some Excel KPI tools etc...........
I have 2007 office installed, so this could explain why I had the formentioned problem.

Installing Office 2007 breaks certain functionality in SQL Server 2005 Business Intelligence Development Studio and Management Studio
If you have SQL Server 2005 installed on your computer and you use Business Intelligence Development Studio (BIDS) or SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS) for working with SQL Server Analysis Services (SSAS) or SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS), then you should expect that certain functionality in BIDS and SSMS will not work after installing Office 2007. Specifically the following functionality will be affected:
BIDS Cube Designero Calculations tab
Actions and KPI tabs (when MDX syntax check is invoked)
Perspectives and Translations tabs (when calculations are present in the cube)
BIDS Reporting Services Project Wizard (when using Analysis Services data source)
