BI Dev as a Job

  • Hi all,

Can I ask a non techy question.

This is my second position as a BI Dev. The last one was for a laid back company.

Reports and cubes were built over a matter of weeks and months.

It was ok but I felt it did not stretch me.

Company I work for now is the exact opposite.

They use the reporting system for operational matters. So for example they use the Datawarehouse

to control production and manufacturing. This seems wrong to me but could be the norm for all I know.

Complicated Reports and cubes have to be built in a matter of days.

My question is, is this normal in the BI world ?

Whilst I am learning a lot more than my last position, which was with hindsight to easy, I find myself getting quite stressed.

I feel like I am back in a support type role rather than a dev role.

Mods, please feel free to move this if it is in the wrong place.

    Thanks all.

  • It does seem the norm for BI jobs that I have worked at, cubes are usually built within a couple of days and up to a week when testing is included. Once you have built a few they get to be fairly straight-forward to build and you can re-use a lot of logic. Complex cubes can take longer.

There is usally pressure to get new reports/measure built as they usally support business functions that require the data (and everyone always needs it done asasp)

  • Thanks for the reply. Very useful.

Guess I just need to get used to it. 🙂
