Best Third-party SQL Admin Tools

  • Hello,

we have a lot of SQL Servers installed and I am looking for best of the breed management suite to ease my daily tasks. I am looking for a suite that can discover all current SQL servers, check compliance, backups, diagnostics, etc.

    Thank you.

  • I don't think there's a good overall tool.

No tool can discover all instances. There are too many ways these can be setup and configured. The best is a tool like SMS/OPerations Manager/System Center that can detect services.

You want to really setup each server to check itself and send errors off to you or better, a group. You want something that checks to be sure each server is alive and there are any number of things that can do this. I like Servers Alive for simple checks like ensuring the servers are actually running.

If you need to worry about scheduling things, use sqlSentry.

Never a big fan of SSMS/EM replacements that roll things up.

  • that's a general consensus I got from a lot of people, I just have too many servers for me to count and sometimes I cannot keep up with all of them. At some point you need to give up the most logical way with desperate way :). I did check Idera's discovery tool and Quest's. Both are fine tools but they complement each other. Quest is easier to use but Idera found more servers running. Oh well.

Thank you for your reply, I will take a look at those two.
