Appreciate advice on the best book to learn SQL Server 2000.
"SQL Server 2000 Fast Answers for DBAS and Developers" sounds as if the content is what I am looking for. Would this be a good choice or are there better alternatives.
I am fairly new to SQL Server having jumped in the deep end. I am converting a LAN based Access Customer Relationship Management System to run on a WAN using an Access frontend / SQL Server backend. Well I started off converting it but due to poor performance have rebuilt it.
All my SQL Server knowledge has so far been gained from reading Access books, searching on this site and using BOL.
I now find that the books I have do not go deep enough and I really need a book which I can read from cover to cover (and dip into) to move forward.

Mark, I checked out the reviews while it sounds an excellent book, I wonder whether it is one step too far for me at this time.

It is NOT a beginner book. For recommended prerequisite reading, check my reading list.Once you feel you have a solid grasp of the basics of SQL Server, Inside SQL Server 2000 can give you advanced details that you just can't find anywhere else.
Above is from books web site http://www.insidesqlserver.com
Unfortunately the prerequisite reading is no longer there.
While I am not a complete beginner I don't think I have a solid grasp of the basics.
Reading reviews again I am wondering whether SQL Server Unleashed might be a better choice for me.

In that case, I don't want to sound like I'm plugging M$ here, but maybe go for the MS Press (or competitors') certification books. And DO the practical bits, don't just read them.
Later on maybe, the Inside SQL Server 2000 book.
Also, a tip is to look at this forum on a regular basis, and investigate and respond on questions. It gets you looking at BOL and working out solutions yourself.

One of the best beginner books is Sams Teach Yourself SQL in 10 minutes.
This book will teach you the basics without overloading you with information.
Highly recomended, it is required reading for all new employees at our company.

"Inside SQL Server" series isn't for beginners. Since you are asking for beginners I'd say "SQL Server 2000 Administrator's Companion" by MS Press.
