A mentor of mine many years ago told me that to move up in an organization two things have to exist at the same time. One is an open position above you that you qualify for, and the other is a person below you who qualifies for your position. He said everyone is worried about the first situation, but not enough people are concerned about the second situation. If you want to move up, always be training your replacement.
