Backup and old file delete GOTCHAs!

  • I use the LSN values by running RESTORE HEADERONLY. We have a t-log transfer process betwen Singapore and London with t-logs going both ways. London have implemented a solution using dates embedded in the file name to determine restore order and delete status. Singapore has implemented a process to extract the LSN and by also getting the backup type control the delete status that way. Sure it is a little more work, but guess which side has the most problems with file managment and is up late at night more often? The Singapore side of the process is almost totally hands off at this point. It is self correcting if files are deleted early (accidentally by London) on the destination side and rock solid on the Singapore side where London are not able to touch.
