  Set the limit of "Search" results to 1000 or whatever you want.

  Yes, put a TOP clause in the query to limit the number of rows.

  Also, we use Idera SQL Diagnostic Manager, and like it a lot. It's great for monitoring, and getting a jump on that "surprise" issue that pops up now and then.
