Hi DBA community,
Are there any known issues running SQL Server 2005 Standard on Windows Server 2003 Standard R2 SP2 (32 bit)? We asked our systems team to re-build a server and they're urging us to use Windows 2003 R1 SP1 because it's the "safer, proven option." Our DBA team wants the latest and greatest because we don't want to go through an OS upgrade or major service pack a couple months down the line.
What would you choose?
I've done research on my own and I have senn no compatibility issues. We're actually running 64-bit 2003 R2 on another SQL Server just fine, so our systems team's concerns don't really make much sense to me.
Thanks in advance for the info and the advice,
Rob

As far as I can remember:
Windows 2003 R2 has been around since Sep 2006
SP2 (both for R1 and R2) has been around since Nov. 2006.
Windows R2 was built to make W2K3 more secure (it turned off a lot of things that were "on" by default), and seems to have done just that.
I've run both SQL 2000 and 2005 on both platforms with no issues. I'm not sure what issue they're expecting to see: I'd expect the R2 to be just as stable, but with fewer odds and ends left open (what you'd want on a secure server).
Puzzled as well.

Your lack of planning does not constitute an emergency on my part...unless you're my manager...or a director and above...or a really loud-spoken end-user..All right - what was my emergency again?
