Analysis Services and Sharepoint

  • Hi,

Am trying to learn how to integrate Sharepoint Services and Analysis Services i.e. how to provide Multidimensional data from MS SQL Server 2K AS in Shareporint Portal Service thru Webparts - for creating Dashboards, Scorecards and so on ...

What is the best way of integrating Sharepoint Server and SQL Analysis Services enabling power users create/modify reports with ease ?

From what I know, Data can be retrieved from MS SQL Server 2K primarily by using PivotTable Services by passing MDX queries. WebParts of Sharepoint will need to use another set of entities that hold the MDX Queries - a report in Reporting Services or a thirds party tool such a ProClarity. IS there any alternative ?

Are there any add-ons that will help me integrate Sharepoint and Analysis Services - exposing a flexible interface to create and modify reports/dashboards. i.e provide adhoc querying from Sharepoint ?

How do handle Security (of Analysis Services) thru Sharepoint ?

  • it depends a little on your environment, but if you're *intranet* only then you could try just using the Office webcomponents (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?displaylang=en&FamilyID=38be67a5-2056-46a1-84b1-337ffb549c5c&nbsp.  I thought (been a long time since i looked) that this would allow you to use (basically) the same "controls" for pivto tables as you'd use in Excel.  Note that this sin't always fast dependant on cube size, though you can make connxn string setting changes to enhance this.

    Cheers,

    Steve.

  • Hi Steve/ All,

I do not know much about how Sharepoint works. Does it mean that Office Web Components are not accessible beyond the intranet. Whats the reason?

If I want my Dashboard to be accessible via internet, then what would be the best method to use.

I found another product from Microsoft - Business Scorecard Accelerator (http://www.microsoft.com/office/solutions/accelerators/scorecards/default.mspx)

Anyone have any idea ant this?

    Thanks,

    Kokank

  • The web components *should* be accessible past the intranet the only real issue is the security for using AS.  Unless you're running Win2K3 at the server end OR you're running AS on the SP server and this server is in the DMZ (ie directly onto the internet), things start to break down a little as you can't pass your credentials more than 1 hop, and that one hop is counted as signing in to IIS on the web server.

THe BSA accelerator is good, we have tried to implement it but with limitied success, mainly due to constraints within it's presentation layer.  Overall i like what it can do but without writing some 'consumer' webparts of our own to manipulate the presentation layer, we can't use it.

Another option that may be worth looking at is the (free) BI portal from Msft.

    Steve.
