Hi there,
One of my clients has asked me to develop an application that will produce a number of views/report to analyse her sales data (AS400), i am talking millions of records here, I have a ran off a few querys in SQL Server and the performance is just not good enough.
So i started looking elsewhere, I've only done some prelimary analysis but it seems that Analysis Server is the database to use, as it stores data in cubes-much faster for this type of access.
I've gone through a few of the basic analysis server tutorials, and it seems perfect, although I would need to customise the output.
I was hoping to use vb.net application and crystal reports to access the cubes, is this possible or have I completing misunderstood its functions?
Other recommendations would be very much appreciated.

I haven't used Crystal to access AS cubes but to generalize, a lot of OLAP front end tools do allow for access to AS cubes. You could use either OLE DB for OLAP, ADOMD, or even raw XMLA (add on for 2000, native for 2005).

Another option is reporting services which you should have already have or can get very easily.
