I'm one of those SSIS users who take advantage of its simplicity. We exchange a lot of data files with outside organizations who prefer to use SFTP for file transfers. Trying to create all the necessary end points and dealing with whitelisting from ADF just becomes an unwanted hassle compared to the simplicity of a single on-prem server using SSIS. I would like to see some of the ADF functionality be added to SSIS, or an open source implementation of ADF to make life easier getting data to and from Azure blob and datalake storage.

That's one of those things that's annoying about ADF, it adds a higher for setup/use, which isn't always needed. We need a Local, simple ADF or SSIS.

I think this is key in your thoughts, Steve:
. If there isn't going to be an investment in SSIS, which I do understand, then invest in a local version of ADF.
There's a much higher probability of this happening than real (and separate) investment in SSIS new features.
Consider this probable future analogous to what's happened with SSRS, with Power BI on-premises Report Server now becoming available in Standard SQL Server licenses, not just Enterprise, and having more-or-less parity (I haven't tested everything!) with SSRS for locally-hosted RDLs. The on-prem version of Power BI Report Server (with its annoying cousin, the separate build of Report Builder!) gets refreshed less often than the cloud services, of course, but its development process has to be connected to the cloud services development, regardless of cadence, rather than being a different animal.
I can see where local ADF would take longer to accomplish than the SSRS transition, especially if it needs to encompass all the things a DTSX can do, not just a subset. Not to mention what will happen to the vendor add-on ecology. But this must be where they would want to head.

I hope so. A few of my dreams/guesses/ideas/jokes have come true.
This was my favorite: https://www.sqlservercentral.com/articles/sql-server-on-linux Of course, it took a decade to come true

Yeah that was a good one ;-). Let's hope this doesn't take a decade...
