I have purchased Excel 2010 and would like to take advantage of the data mining tools for the analysis of horse racing data.
There appears to be a lot of confusion as to what software is required and what works with Excel 2010 and Windows 7.
Just what do I need need with Excel 2010 and Windows 7? I am familiar with both.
I am not out to spend the equivalent of another car on software, as I am a home user doing it for a hobby.
Just where do I start, as there appears to be a lot of conflicting advice? I have requested similar in other areas with no response, but this site looks promising.

If you are going to access existing data tables then go to http://www.powerpivot.com. You find a free BI add-in for Excel 2010.
It works best on the 64-bit version due to the 32-bit memory limits. However, if you are not crunching millions of rows of data you will be fine with the 32-bit version.

Not sure what 'Bl' is?
I have visited the PowerPivot website and managed to download and install the add-in. Is that all I need for smallish amounts of data?
I am using the 32bit version of Windows 7, but my databases are not large.
Thanks for the feedback.

Got it! (Business Intelligence).
This looks OK for PowerPivot.

That is all you need!
There are some decent tutorials on that site. Pay particular attention to the ones that show how to create your datasources and the ones on creating links between data tables (if relationships are already part of the table definitions this will be automatic).
Then the rest is pretty much drag and drop. Works like regular Excel PivotTables, but can use more than one datasource in a single table. Excel PivotTables are restricted to only one data table.

Thank you! You have saved me a lot of browsing and given me inspiration. The book is on its way and the site has been bookmarked.
