Adding a sql instance to an installation

  • HI. We currently are running our sql server with a default instance. I've been asked what would be the impact to add 'an instance' to our original installation. Is there a performance impact, hardware impact or maintenance impact?

    Thanks so much,

    Juanita

  • It depends ... but generally I'd say yes. It depends on the the following:

    • The OS
    • # of CPUs
    • CPU speed
    • Are the CPUs Xeon or not
    • the amount of RAM
    • Disks
    • number of them
    • their size
    • the speed of the disks
    • the disk controller(s)

Also the database application(s) that are using the SQL Servers databases.

In order to make a more informed decision you will also have to gahther some performance statistics for both the OS and SQL Server using perfmon too.

  • thank you!
