2 days research. No solution. Have seen this in many forums.
I create a linked server to MS Access. The linked server works for a day or two, then it fails. Deleting and re-creating the linked server does not fix the problem. Restarting the SQL instance does fix the problem. SP2 installed. The Access DB is not a candidate to upgrade.
This always worked fine in SQL 2000. There must be a specific reason for this.

What is the reason you cannot use at least Access XP 2002 Jet engine?

Not sure what you mean? Do you mean change the database file to this? This Datafile is part of an integrated system which is a big piece of a 100M dollar Waste Water SCADA system. I have no control over the vendors software systems.
If you meant to change the engine that SQL uses to access this DB, please give more information as to how this is possible.
Thanks for your reply.

The reason I am asking is I am not sure SQL Server 2005 can link with a JET engine 4.0 that is not at least SP8. So since the system must remain Access 97 you may need an intermediate place either use SQL Server 2000 before 2005 or use Access 2002 before 97.

Hey man... that intermediate idea was very good. I can do that.
Sometimes a guy can get so narrow minded when trying to find the solution for a specific problem. I block out some simpler ideas.
Thanks.
