32 BIT vs 64 BIT and Service pack testing

  • Any opinions on a healthy debate we are having here at the office.

I am a huge advocate of doing full application regression testing whenever a service pack goes into production. The problem we have here, our production data cluster is 64bit, while our QA environment is 32 bit.

Does this mean that any service pack validation is pointless on the 32bit as the code is completly differnet between 32bit service packs and 64bit?

  • our dev servers for SQL are still 32bit and behind on updates. QA is 64 bit and is always ahead in builds compared to production. Most production is on 64 bit.

ideal everything should be the same but in some cases no one wants to spend money for new hardware. example is we just moved a lot of BI on to a 64 bit SQL 2005 cluster with a scale out Reporting Services web server config. the dev environment is still 32 bit and will continue to be that way
