If I use 2012 Management Console from the Express version to Manage an Enterprise version of 2008, will things like Maintenance plans be available, or have those features been cut out of the Management Console that comes with Express altogether? (We haven't gotten around to upgrading the production servers to 2012 yet so I don't have an Enterprise key for it yet).

I have 2012 Express on my laptop and have used it to manage 2008. Most of the functionality is there but, for some things (such as maintenance plans), I have had some issues.

for the other direction, when you have the full SSMS and you connect to a lesser isntance, it varies based on what you connect to; i have 2012 developer installed, and when i connect to a 2005 SQL express, which does not support maint plans, there's no folder for it in object explorer.
