What I’ve learned from Groundhog Day.

,

One of my all time favorite movies is Groundhog Day staring Bill Murray. In case you’ve never watched it (and I obviously recommend it if you haven’t) a man gets stuck living the same day over and over again. At first he does all kinds off odd things that he would have never done in real life. (Some showing just how unpleasant a person can be when there are no consequences to their actions.) Then, as this continues on and on he eventually gets board, and then depressed, and even suicidal. Finally though he realizes that he has a lot of time and can do great things with it. He learns to play piano, how to read and speak French (to impress a wowman of course), ice sculpting, and works to fix a number of the bad things that happen to other people throughout the day.

Now, with a star like Bill Murray it has to be funny (and it is, it’s hilarious), but the thing that’s always gotten to me is all of the amazing things he learns to do. I mean who doesn’t want to learn another language or how to play an instrument? But I mean he’s living the same day over and over again so he just has so much time on his hands.

Then it struck me. I am living the same day over and over again.

Today.

I have the opportunity to learn whatever I want, I can just put in a little bit of time each day and over time I’ll end up with a skill.

In case it wasn’t obvious this is my new years resolution post, so here are a few goals for coming year.

  • I’m working on learning a couple of languages. Spanish and Hebrew. My current goal is to continue to use Duolingo every day to work on them and get at least half way through Harry Potter in Spanish and maybe get started on it in Hebrew.
  • I’m still working on Azure (slowly). I recently signed up for http://www.skylinesacademy.com. So far their courses are quite good so I’m going to finish the free ones then probably pay for the one year subscription.
  • I really need to finish my Powershell in a month of lunches book. I started it last year, and took a week class on Powershell that really helped my understanding. Now I need to finish the book and get some practice in.
  • I’m not sure it’s worth mentioning but I’m going to try to hit my normal ~100 blog posts for the year.
  • I’m going to try to speak at least twice this year. Again, that’s what I’ve been doing historically so we will see how it goes.
  • I’m getting a new laptop. Rather than just straight installing SQL on it I’m going to get containers up and running and use them instead.
  • I’m going to start working with Azure Data Studio and Notebooks.
  • Last but not least I need to do some more blogging about working with Azure. I have a couple of posts I need to get written but they are going to take me learning a few new skills.
  • Oh, and I really need to update my about me pages.

You’ll notice I don’t have any certification goals in there. I’ve been thinking I need to get a few, and my work has certainly been pushing for me to get a cloud certification of some sort. It’s on the radar, just not enough to actually put as a goal.
