In this newsletter:

  • Add SSRS to the SQLServer PowerShell Provider?
  • Tonight: PowerShell ? SQL Server: Modern Database Administration with dbatools and dbareports
  • Next Week: Converting Unreliable Deployments Into Consistent Releases
  • March 1st session: Operational Validation of SQL Server at scale with PowerShell and Jenkins
  • March 15th session: PowerShell for Implementation Engineers
  • PowerShell + DevOps Global Summit April 9, 2017

Add SSRS to the SQLServer PowerShell Provider?

SSRS is the largest major component of SQL Server not represented in the SQLServer PowerShell Provider. This vital component increases complexity of deployment tasks and reduces productivity of SSRS Developers. Up-Vote here if you would like to see SSRS in the SQLServer PowerShell Provider https://connect.microsoft.com/SQLServer/feedback/details/3122809/

PowerShell ? SQL Server: Modern Database Administration with dbatools and dbareports

This evening, we’re joining up with the official SQL PASS Rochester NY chapter to offer an extra online session. Join PowerShell MVP & DBA Chrissy LeMaire and PowerShell Expert, DBA, and PowerShell VC Officer Rob Sewell to learn how you can take advantage of some amazing community modules to improve your work/bacon life balance.

We will show you how to perform many DBA tasks easily and simply using PowerShell. We will teach you how easy that is, along with many other solutions as well as showing you how to easily gather information about your estate and display it in SSRS or PowerBI.

Our session is aimed at DBAs, from junior to senior, who want to embrace the latest methods and increase their toolset.

Converting Unreliable Deployments Into Consistent Releases

The deployment process is frustrating; an object is missing, an object is deployed in the wrong order or an incorrect version. Our goal is to deploy the same script in Development, QA, UAT, Prod and any other environment with proper testing. Together we will discover how to separate each object for proper order deployment. We will only release objects which have been changed. Deployments can cause you trouble but we will provide a reliable deployment and version control process. Join Thomas Norman as he shows you how PowerShell can help us accomplish this goal.

Operational Validation of SQL Server at scale with PowerShell and Jenkins

Are you accountable for databases or database servers? Do you fix problems only to see them pop up again months or years later in slightly different scenarios? Have you been called at 2am and asked to “health check” hundreds of servers for an issue that nobody in the world has ever documented before and wished there was an easy mode to do that or even avoid the problem in the first place?

If so then Operational Validation can help you. In this session you’re going to get:

  • mindset on how to handle your day to day duties in a way that keeps you efficient, honest to yourself and to others, while covering your posterior.
  • Free tools to fix things and make sure they stay fixed over time. Really free. As in you couldn’t pay for them even if you wanted to.

If you work with one instance you’re going to learn how to manage five hundred instances. And if you work with five hundred instances you’re going to learn how to have fun doing it.

We’re going to learn:

  • Jenkins, a cool web application you can install on your workstation to provide orchestration and reports.
  • How to integrate PowerShell with Jenkins and multi-thread efficiently in the background with PoshRSJob using ready-to-go templates so you don’t need to worry about how it works.
  • Then we’re going to write some tests. They’re not going to be beautiful tests. We’re going to be testing some of the scummiest, most crapulent edge cases SQL Server has to offer. Please bring tissues because there will be tears. If you’ve ever said, “I don’t know what to test”, I’ll make you regret it.
  • I’ll also discuss a few other PowerShell modules like CimSession and DbData and why you might want to use them for reliable and scalable tests.

By the end of the session you should be bouncing off the wall and reconsidering your life. I want you to start screaming about Operational Validation from the rooftops, and have the tools and know-how to quickly start on your own.

You’ll also get pretty cool web-based graphs like this:

PowerShell for Implementation Engineers

For an integration specialist, most of your projects are limited to implementation and less administration. Implementations are mostly about delivering a scope of work and doesn’t give you much of space to actually grasp the power of PowerShell, again PowerShell is most effective for people who do day-to-day administration and live with the routine-tasks on a daily basis; on the other hand, for implementations combined with the GUI of a product will for sure leverage you to create your own framework. Join us in this session and we’ll open your eyes to the capabilities you’ve been missing out and we’ll give you back all those lunch breaks you missed

PowerShell + DevOps Global Summit April 9-12, 2017 Bellevue, WA, USA

This is our annual, global event featuring expert presenters, participation by the PowerShell product team members, and an incredible opportunity to meet and mingle with the PowerShell community.  Brochure & Registration | Newsfeed

Call it a Deep Dive. Call it a conference. Call it whatever you like, the Summit is a unique and special event. It’s the in-person gathering place for PowerShell enthusiasts and PowerShell.org forums users. It’s a place to explore and further you knowledge of DevOps principles and practices. It’s a place to make new connections, learn new techniques, and offer something to your peers and colleagues.

PowerShell + DevOps Global Summit is an official production of The DevOps Collective, Inc.. All sessions (to the limit of our technical ability and barring any glitches) are recorded (not live-streamed), and posted for free on the PowerShell.org YouTube channel, often within a week or two of the event’s conclusion. But that’s no substitute for the live event, where you’ll also engage with experts, MVPs, product team members, and peers in an environment that’s quite unlike anything you’ve experienced before… unless you’ve been to a PowerShell and DevOps Summit!

Automate Glen Berry’s DMV Script with PowerShell

If you know Glenn Berry you probably know his DMV scripts which are amazing to analyze your databases and instances.

But if you face the 1500 lines of code, you don’t want to execute each query manually especially if you’re handling multiple instances with multiple databases.

We’ll discuss the thought process how the script was developed, some of the pitfalls that come with PowerShell and tips and tricks to take home.

If you like the DMV scripts by Glenn Berry and want to know more about PowerShell come and attend this session.

Wed, Apr 19, 2017 12:00 PM – 1:00 PM EDT (GMT -4) Registration URL: https://attendee.gotowebinar.com/register/6090040252464515588

As always, the recording for today’s session will be posted to our YouTube channel, subscribe to be notified when it is ready!
