Attended my first one in DC back in December and it is well worth the time.

I was pretty shaky on backup/restore strategies and one of the sessions there was extremely helpful. Actually having someone go through various backup and restore procedures and demonstrate them in real time solidified the whole thing for me.

And I will never forget the session on execution plans - with Grant Fritchey sitting in the second row.

    Don't ask - just go.

These are a couple of the reasons that, IMHO, make these events so successful.

When I've attended the events solely as an attendee, I've learned something new or reinforced something old each time.

And I've also had the privilege of having Steve sit in on my encryption presentation (in the front row!) and not throw a single piece of rotten fruit at me. His feedback has made all my presentations since then even better.
