  • The "nearest" airport anywhere in a given flight will never be more than half the distance between the start and end airports of the flight. One very easy and effective optimization to make is to calculate the min and max latitude based on that knowledge and limit the airports you look at to that. A secondary and slightly more complex calulation is to do the same with longitude.
