Will the application work as usual if we create alias with existing cluster name for a new sql server instance and break cluster ?

  • Hi Experts,

One of the SQL Server 2005 cluster database is being moved to a new standalone VM instance.

Application team has some challenges in changing DB configuration etc; So they can't point it to the new instance name.

If I create an alias for the new standalone VM instance with the same name as existing cluster name, will the application work without any issues (once they break cluster) ?. Kindly guide.

    Thanks,

    Smith.

  • I don't see a reason why it shouldn't work.

However want to conform, someone please help. Thanks.

    Samith.

  • What sort of alias? DNS or SQL?

The cluster will have a clustered instance name, eg. server\instance. whereas the VM is probably a default instance. A SQL alias will work if there's an application server, otherwise it'll be needed on all clients.
