Are You Working More Hours?

  • I worry that there has been a transition from putting in extra hours to get ahead to putting in extra hours just to stop falling behind.

An elite athlete will tell you that recovery time is as important as training time.  I think this applies to brain work too.  Elite athletes wear out their bodies at a young age too.

    That isn't healthy.

When faced with a problem where we keep hitting a wall, the old advice to sleep on it is surprisingly effective.

No one can sprint a marathon.

  • Good question, Steve. For me and my colleagues, it's a mixture of both. But for the most part, we're doing it without AI. Two years ago, our CISO blocked all AI to everyone, indefinitely. So, we're not in any desperate race to keep up with the other guy. Nor are we afraid of falling behind. When I've had a lot of work requiring extra time it is because multiple managers or program managers are demanding that we work only on their project. That's hard to do when its 3 or 4 projects. The only thing that prevents us from working 60+ hours per week is we are hourly employees, and by policy working overtime has to be approved by one's supervisor, which doesn't tend to happen. But the pressure to work overtime is very real.
