An Unexciting Exciting Release

  • So there's a few of the features in 2025 I do feel I'm looking forward to getting at this point.  For me, as a "Production DBA," the being able to backup to URL using a Managed Identity is going to warm the cockles of my cold, black heart.  Right now, we've got a Powershell Agent Job that connects utilizing a Managed Identity for authentication to generate a new SAS Token monthly and updating the credential in the SQL Server.

Sadly, because of another of our processes, we ALSO have a credential that uses the Storage Key (AUGH) in order to support another process that can't handle database backups that are spanned across multiple files in our blob storage (can't remember if it's Block Blob Objects or Page Blob Objects that have a "size" limitation, that we run into if we don't span multiple files.)

Some of the other features, while a bit more Developer-focused, I think will give the developers I support a gleam in their eyes.  Especially if we can utilize the Mirroring to Fabric to retire our Data Gateway installation.

I *WAS* thinking of trying to run out the clock on our SQL 2019 instances to my retirement (ah, the joys of extended support) so I didn't have to fuss with a migration, but now?  Now I'm thinking of trying to push migrating to 2025 in the next 12 months...
