What is pivoting?
Por example:

The simple explanation is "converting rows to colums". For how to do that in T-SQL, please see the following article.

In MS Excel and other "front end" reporting, pivoting is taken to the next step. This is where you have a report with, possibly, many different column categories and row groupings that you can click and drag to the opposite dimension (row groups become column categories and vice versa). In the right hands, it can be a powerful analysis tool.
