Sharepoint virgin needs helping hand

  • Hi ya'll. I have a possible project on the table and I'm wondering if Sharepoint is the best tool for the job.

We have an ERP. The users have built some sort or BOM tracking feature in Excel and now it runs like a dog with 5 broken legs and all of Santa's gifts on its back. We can't find a module for the erp that does exactly what we need, nor for a fair price.

That BOM "app" is used by 8-15 users. Each of them need to read / write some data in the "application". It's basically a task list with multiple status changes (obviously this will get way more complex over the years)

We are currently looking to either to this in asp.net or Sharepoint and I'm wondering which one is the best for this.

All the users are super power users in Excel and I'd love for them to be able to stay in the environement if possible (especially since I've built 100+ reports in SSRS for them).

    --Perv tracker! :Whistling:

I've just started learning Sharepoint, but I have a good deal of experience in programming in ASP.Net and I'd have to say that given what you're looking for Sharepoint seems the better solution. As I said, I've just started learning it, but from what I've read with Sharepoint you'll be able to

Create task lists with the status updates you want, it seems able to handle a good deal of complexity and customization in the Lists features.

Allow users to work in Excel either natively or through a browser

Host the 100+ SSRS reports directly in Sharepoint

Create additional ASP.Net functionality as needed

    I hope this helps.

  • Any "hello world" tutorial you liked or online class?

Any "hello world" tutorial you liked or online class?

I went to the local Barnes & Noble and sorted through every book they had on Sharepoint for Administrators, Developers and generic Sharepoint. I ended up getting 2 from WROX Press, one for Administrators and one for Developers, but there were some other good ones out there as well, I just tend to like the WROX books. Hosting sites are apparently fairly cheap and make a good sandbox. We'll be getting one of those shortly.

    I don't really like books...

    Anyone got anything good online?

  • Setting up the "free version" (Microsoft Sharepoint Foundation) should give you a playground to start getting familiar with Sharepoint, I'd think.

Tx for the info. I'd still love a good starter's guide. Is there a ms guide that's worth its salt for this? All really need now is hello world stuff. From there on out I can order books or courses if we choose to go this way. I'm more in the proof of concept phase here b4 going for full budget and analysis.

I'd suggest someplace like this http://www.sharepointhoster.com/pricing if you don't have space for it on your own servers.

As far as a Hello World, considering what you want to do maybe this?

    http://www.fpweb.net/sharepoint-tutorials/wss-v3/customization/templates-create-list/

    or something like

    http://office.microsoft.com/en-gb/windows-sharepoint-services-help/create-a-list-HA010099248.aspx

I'd suggest focusing on Lists to start out. If those can't do what you want, Sharepoint might not be the way you want to go.

Also worth considering, are you going to be using Silverlight as well? The book I'm reading (for 2010) seems to be emphasizing that, though I don't think we'll be going in that direction ourselves.

Glad to have helped in some small way. Good luck! I look forward to hearing if Sharepoint is meeting your needs since, as I said, we're about to go down that road as well.

"slutered"? I'm sorry, I don't know that term.

  • Report looks nice in the web version (not html export, just viewing the report).

Then exporting to excel there's 1 gazillion cells merges, colors changent, etc.

Takes 1 hour just to unmerge the cells and reformat to be able to use the report.
